Separate Buildings for Gents and Ladies: Why It Matters More Than Separate Floors

If your company employs both men and women who need staff accommodation, the phrase "gender-separated" can mean very different things from one operator to the next. Some camps offer separate floors within a shared building; a smaller number offer entirely separate buildings. This post explains why that distinction matters in practice, and exactly what to check before you sign.
What is the difference between separate floors and separate buildings?
A separate-floors arrangement houses men and women in the same building on different levels. They typically share the main entrance, the stairwells or lifts, and often ground-floor facilities such as the kitchen or laundry. The separation is procedural: a rule, a sign on the landing, and sometimes a guard who is expected to enforce it.
A separate-buildings arrangement gives each group its own structure. The ladies building has its own entrance, its own kitchen and dining area, its own laundry and drying area, and its own security coverage. Nobody passes through anybody else’s living space to reach their room. The separation is physical, built into the site plan rather than written into a house rule.
On a quotation, both models can appear under the same line: "ladies accommodation available." The only way to know which one you are buying is to ask directly, and ideally to visit and walk the route from the gate to the room.
Why do separate floors fall short in practice?
Separate floors look adequate on paper, and for some workforces they function without incident. But there are recurring weak points that HR and admin managers report:
- Shared circulation. When entrances, corridors, stairwells and lifts are common, separation depends on every resident following the rules at every hour of the day. One lapse undoes the policy.
- Facility timesharing. If the kitchen or laundry is shared, the operator either splits access by schedule — which residents find inconvenient and frequently ignore — or lets the spaces mix, which defeats the purpose.
- Privacy in daily routines. Consider something as ordinary as drying laundry. In a ladies-only building with its own dedicated drying area, this is a non-issue. On a shared rooftop or in a common courtyard, it becomes a daily discomfort.
- Complaint and incident handling. When something does go wrong, a shared building makes it harder to establish what happened and harder to reassure the residents affected.
- Recruitment and family expectations. Many female candidates — and their families back home — ask specifically about the living arrangement before accepting an offer. "A separate building with its own entrance and security" is an answer that closes the question. "A separate floor" often is not.
What should you check before signing for ladies staff accommodation?
Whether you are a PRO arranging housing for a new batch of arrivals or an HR manager moving staff from an unsatisfactory camp, walk through this checklist with any operator:
- Building or floor? Ask the question in those words, then verify it on a site visit. Look at where the entrances are and who walks past them.
- Entrance and security. Does the ladies building have its own entrance? Is there 24-hour security, and does CCTV cover the entrance and common areas?
- Kitchen and dining. Does the building contain its own equipped kitchen and dining area, or are these shared with the rest of the camp on a timetable?
- Laundry and drying. Are washing machines and a drying area inside the building, so residents never need to carry laundry through shared space?
- Housekeeping. Who cleans the common areas, and how often?
- Supervisor arrangement. If you are placing a female supervisor or warden with the group, is a supervisor room with an attached washroom available in the same building?
- Approvals. Is the camp MOHRE-approved? Ask to see the approval rather than taking it on trust.
One note on regulation: UAE authorities set standards for worker accommodation, including gender separation, and these requirements are updated from time to time. Treat the summary above as a practical starting point and confirm current rules with your PRO or the relevant authority before you commit.
Does separate-building accommodation cost more?
Not necessarily, and this is where buyers sometimes talk themselves out of the better option. Across the Dubai market, the gap between a separate-floor camp and a separate-building camp is usually smaller than the gap created by what is and is not included in the rate — utilities, air conditioning, housekeeping and security can swing a monthly figure far more than the separation model does. Compare quotes on a genuinely all-inclusive basis before judging either option expensive.
It also helps to price the alternative honestly. A floor-based arrangement that produces complaints, early resignations among female staff, or an incident that HR has to manage is not cheap. What a separate building buys you is a lower risk profile: fewer grievances, easier audits, and a straightforward answer when candidates ask about living arrangements.

FAQ
Is ladies staff accommodation available in Dubai’s industrial areas?
Yes, though it is less common than gents accommodation, and the standard varies widely. Areas such as Jebel Ali and Dubai Investments Park 2 have options serving logistics, manufacturing and trading companies. Confirm whether the arrangement is a separate building or a separate floor before shortlisting.
What is the difference between a ladies floor and a ladies building?
A ladies floor sits inside a shared building, with common entrances and often shared facilities, relying on rules to keep the groups apart. A ladies building is a physically separate structure with its own entrance, kitchen, dining, laundry and security. The second model removes the daily friction points the first one creates.
Can we house a female supervisor with her team?
Well-run camps offer supervisor rooms with an attached washroom alongside standard rooms. If you are placing a supervisor or warden with a group of female staff, ask for a supervisor room inside the ladies building itself so she lives with the team she oversees.
